The most important part of recruiting a new Ranger is the interview! I turn down probably three of four responses. Remember: Rangers are the best, and can only maintain our high standards by accepting the best!
You can tell some books by their cover
You can usually tell a huge amount of someone simply from the first tell they send you.
Examples:
[Daeheren]: I bid you greetings, and am most interested in becoming one of the Rangers!
[Beaturface]: can i join ur guild plz plz plz???
You can already tell that the first response is almost certainly going to get a guild invite. The second should consider themselves fortunate if they even get a response.
Pay close attention to the structure of the inquiry. If they use proper capitalization, punctuation, etcetera, they are probably a good cantidate and will represent the Rangers well. If something is obviously a typo, ignore it. The most hardened grammar nazi makes the occasional typo. If the reply is in RP talk, ten times better, but remember that RP has never been a requirement, just a great addition to the atmosphere.
Pay attention to your feelings! Gut instinct will serve you well in recruiting. A younger person who can't type like they're writing a book could turn out to be one of the best Rangers! Likewise, the Shakepeare who makes you uneasy may be giving you that impression for a reason. These are the people who will call for a much longer interview so you can get a measure of their true quality.
Okay, so your cantidate has passed the initial sniff test. Time to get down to business...
The interview
Now you are on! Remember that you are representing the Rangers, and may be the cantidate's first encounter with us. Be eloquent and kind. If you are looking for a quality in them, be sure you demonstrate it tenfold.
The first question I always ask is:
What is your interest in the Rangers?
This covers a lot of ground. This will tell you why they want to join. What about their experiences with the guild, or about your recruiting macro made them want to join us. If the response to this is good (looking for honorable/good people, want to be in a close community, looking for a relaxed play environment, etc.), then I usually make my decision to let them join right here. If they just like the guild name, want to be in a big guild, want to be in a guild with a lot of 70's or the like, then they need more prodding. If they are after something that is not a focus, like raiding, then it may be time to start letting them down easy. This is also where you may be able to tell if someone just wants to be run through instances.
If I'm not assured yet, I ask:
What do you have to offer the Rangers?
This does two things. It not only tells you how excited they are to be a part of the group and what skills they have to offer, it also lets them know that they will be expected to give as much they get. This is another good one for getting a feel of their quality.
Have you looked over the website?
If they seem like a good cantidate otherwise, I normally just tell them they should do this soon when they have time. If uncertain, I ask them to do so now. Those who are not really interested or suited to the Rangers will go aaway on their own at this. Those who are likely to be good Rangers will do so, and show considerably increased interest afterward. This is a great tool to let cantidates sort themselves into the good and bad categories without taking too much effort on your part.
You may also want to ask:
Why are you leaving your old guild?
If they were somewhere else before, this can help tell you if the Rangers is right for them.
Some things to work in:
The core that makes a Ranger what they are is this: "Offer more than you ask, and give more than you take". This is our weath, our power, our prestige. Work this creed in anywhere you can.
We are not a raiding guild. We may raid, and we may even do larger raids eventually, but that will never be our focus. Raiders have a much different mentality than we do, and are not compatible with the Rangers.
If they aren't bad, but don't quite have what it takes to be a Ranger, you may want to recommend them to an ally guild. |
