Rangers have a reputation as good, intelligent players. As such, you may find yourself marking targets for your groups. (This often happens when the person who organises the party does not want to mark targets.)
Everyone has their own personal style for using raid icons, but I figured I'd throw together a short list of facts and suggestions.
Firstly, my suggestions:
Skull - First DPS
Shield/coin/circle - Off-tank (or second DPS)
Purple diamond - Sap or Banish or Seduce or Enslave Demon
Blue square - Freezing Trap
Moon - Polymorph or Seduce
X - Sap or kill-sequence*
Additionally, I use X on non-elites and have a DPS class solo it before assisting with skull.
Green triangle - Hibernate or second Freezing Trap or Entangling Roots or Wyvern Sting
Star - Mind Control or Shackle Undead or second Polymorph or kill-sequence*
* Kill sequence is the order in which the mobs are killed. I tend to like Skull, Shield, Star, X, if no crowd control is available.
Secondly, a brief list of facts regarding crowd control:
Entangling Root (druid) - Can only be used outdoors.
Hibernate (druid) - Can be done in combat and multiple times during a fight... can be used against beasts and dragonkin. (If a druid is tanking and Hibernate is an option, the druid should pull with Hibernate, then shift and tank skull.)
Freezing Trap (hunter) - Can now be done in combat and multiple times during a fight, but with a cooldown... can be used against most mobs.
Wyvern Sting (hunter) - Can be done in combat... survival spec.
Polymorph (mage) - Can be done in combat and multiple times during a fight... can be used against humanoids and beasts.
Shackle Undead (priest) - Can be used in combat and multiple times during a fight... can only be used against undead.
Mind Control (priest) - Can be used in combat, but removes the caster from combat... can only be used against humanoids.
Sap (rogue) - Can only be used out of combat, against humanoids who are also out of combat... rogue returns to stealth after using.
Seduce (warlock - succubus) - Can be done in combat and multiple times during a fight... can only be used against humanoids.
Banish (warlock) - Can be done in combat and multiple times during a fight... can be used against demons and elementals.
Enslave Demon (warlock) - Can be done in combat... can only be used against demons... dismisses the warlock's current pet.
Fear (warlock)
And finally, some suggestions on kill-sequence:
1) If there is a non-elite, it can be soloed by DPS. I prefer rogues to take this job, followed by hunters, followed by squishies... I mean mages.
2) Down healers first. They are generally squishy (easy to kill), just make sure you break their heal casts. Reasoning: you don't want them to break CC and start healing the things you're killing.
3) Melee. While they are not as squishy as casters, you can pull them wherever you want more easily. If Freezing Trap is being used for CC, use it on melee.
4) Casters. They do big damage from range. Use line of sight to pull them to you, if possible. They're squishy; they should go down fast. Use long CCs, especially ones that can be stringed (used back-to-back).
5) Ranged. Not as squishy as casters, but same technique for handling them: LoS pull. Use long CCs, especially ones that can be stringed (used back-to-back). |

Whoo! Can't tell you how long I've been meaning to write that up. Thank you for facilitating my laziness!
You pretty much got the standard icons we use perfect. Only thing I have to add is that the blue square is not being used for freeze trap. |

I would have to agree with Xiera, I am beginning to see more blue squares as freeze traps.
